A bit about me
Hi, I’m Bryan. And I’m probably the proof that you need that life (like my waistline) doesn’t necessarily get smaller as you get older. It can in fact get a bit fancier and have better luggage and posher lounge access if you choose it to.
I started this blog because I recently decided to slide into semi-retirement early, and realised I needed something to fill my days with. And because the world has enough travel influencers (and YouTube airline reviewers) to last for some time
And there’s already sufficient online advice about hostels with shared bathrooms, “best places to visit in the Algarve”, and walkthroughs of cruise cabins
So here I am.
Ta da.
My partner of 32 years passed recently, so I usually travel alone now. This isn’t really because I have to (I have some of the best friends anyone could wish for – some of them are even allowed a passport now) but because I choose to. I don’t believe that solo travel, specially in your fifties, sixties and beyond, should ever be a consolation prize; it’s the good stuff.
- No compromising on the itinerary.
- No small talk over breakfast unless I choose it.
- No arguing over the choice of in-room movies.
Just me, decent luggage, and a bucket list of cocktails, places and experiences
About you
This is a space aimed at people who probably pretty much know who they are by now, what they like, and who don’t need anyone’s blessing to book a one-way ticket or make a reservation for one in an upscale restaurant.
Whether you’re divorced, widowed, single, or partnered with someone who hates flying or going on holiday, hopefully this blog will have something for you.
And if you’re queer or you’re an ally, you are doubly welcome here. Quite frankly I’ve spent enough of my life editing myself to appease others, so I’m not going to be doing it here or doing it now – and definitely not when I’m on vacation.
What to expect
Expect honest reviews (I will tell you when that “boutique hotel” is actually a barely-converted trash motel), practical guides and helpful tips for solo travellers who like nice things and interesting places, as well as the occasional opinion piece.
Luckily for everyone, I have many MANY opinions, and I love sharing them.
Fun huh?
Come for the travel tips. Linger around for the mild snark. And come back for all the opinions.
